That’s the best line from My Prairie Home, a documentary about transgender folk singer Rae Spoon.
My Prairie Home is part movie, part music video. Haunting. Beautiful. Brilliant.
Spoon tells about growing up different in a conservative household ruled by a parent with mental illness.
I especially enjoyed the way Spoon tackles complex issues using simple lyrics.
Here are the lyrics to one song that I really liked:
Sunday Dress
When I was a little girl. I thought I had to hold up the world. Singing “Hallelujah” in the choir to keep my feet out of the fire.
My prairie home. My prairie home. My prairie home. Fits like a Sunday dress.
When I was fourteen the devil came for me. Showed me hell could be pretty. I had a poster at the end of my bed. Kurt Cobain in a wedding dress.
My prairie home. My prairie home. My prairie home. Fits like a Sunday dress.
Shaved my head and did my best. Tried to stand tall with whiskey on my breath. I sure wish I was a man. I would never go to church again.
My prairie home. My prairie home. My prairie home. Fits like a Sunday dress.
So, yeah, I would highly recommend My Prairie Home. We watched it through iTunes for $4.99.
Rock on, Rae Spoon.

What’s the last movie you saw? Would you recommend it?
I have surrendered to the dark side … I wanted to know what all the fuss was about, but then I had to revisit the past to gain context before I engaged with the present, and then there was the death in the family that unashamedly piqued my interest, also, Michelle Rodriguez. Finished #4 last night.
What did I just watch, and where will it end?
😀
You had me at Michelle Rodriguez. I know the answer to your puzzle so will allow my readers to solve.
Reblogged this on Bull Dyker.
Thanks for the reblog, friend!
Just went to see Clouds of Sils Maria – has some lesbian subtext but no sex/physicality – more about becoming a middle aged woman than sexuality. A rare movie in which all the main characters are complex women. Great acting, straight forward plot, held my interest to the end.
Thanks for this. I’ve been wavering regarding whether to see or not. Looks like a solid cast. I’ve been a Kristen Stewart fan ever since she played Joan Jett in the movie The Runaways. I’ll have to check this out when it shows up at the artsy theater we frequent.
It passes the Bechdel test with flying colors.
I’m looking forward to this getting to a theatre up here too … that, or on DVD.
AfterEllen had a great piece on Kristen Stewart’s queer roles a while back … lemme see if I can find the URL . . . here it is: http://www.afterellen.com/movies/425457-screen-queerness-kristen-stewart
Thanks for the link. I usually don’t go to first run American films (I like documentaries), so I Kristen Stewart wasn’t on my gaydar. Donna read the review in the New York Times and twisted my arm.
