I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month this year. The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days and have a first draft for a novel. Kick-off is today.
“What’s your book about?” my editor asked.
“Lesbian romance set in the 80s. Big hair, big love, something like that,” I wrote back.
“I’m feeling nostalgic,” she wrote. “But mullets.”
So, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. If you don’t hear from me in November, I’m busy writing about the 80s and lesbians and quoting lyrics from songs sung by the big hair bands. “And, baby, talk dirty to me.” Like that.
Because lesbians rule and the 80s were the best and if you’ve never rocked a mullet you’ve never really lived.
If you want to help a writer out, I still need a name for a really great, fictional lesbian bar. Best answer will find its way into my novel.
Anything else that needs to be in there? Trivial Pursuit, Pac-Man, a Rubik’s Cube …
Oh, and if you’re doing NaNoWriMo, e-mail me and we can be NaNo buddies.
I would love to read your novel!
Thanks for the vote of confidence! Hoping it turns into a real book.
Congrats on participating in NaNoWriMo. This is my first year. I’m picking up on some good energy vibes. Hey, I’m up for being “writer buddies.” Haven’t a clue how to make that happen – hook me up? As for club names, I’m blank on that one. For other fun stuff – Walkman, bolo ties, hair scrunchies. I was a HUGE Flashdance chick so my standard wardrobe items were leg warmers and capezios. Oh ya, madonna gloves too on a night out, you know, the fingerless elbow-length sexy gloves. Hope this helps. Keep on writing.
Same to you, WW. To add a buddy, go to the search feature at the top of the NaNo page. Search for authors. My name is rtheo. You should find me on the second page that comes up. Already got a Walkman in my novel. Have a bolo tie scene all planned out. Love the idea of the Madonna gloves. I have an idea for how they might play into a scene. Keep typing!
I’m on the fence about participating this year. I have so many ideas that I started but never did much with, so maybe I should dust one of those off this year…
Pick one of those projects and see how you can add to it. Come on, you can do it!
This post is exactly the motivation I needed to kick my ass in to gear and start writing!
Lesbian bar: “KlonDyke”?
Awesome! November is a great time to work toward your writing goals. Will certainly consider Klondyke.
Lesbian bar idea: The Golden Onion
Love, someone who mostly reads fantasy novels and doesn’t really go to bars
Like the Golden Onion. Thanks for the suggestion!
Maybe “Sappho’s”?
Great minds. That was a name I was considering. If I ever open up a lesbian bar, I’m going to call it Sappho’s.
The Dugout? For Softball dykes?
I like it. That would add another dimension. Hey, Jamie, do you know any books about what is was like to be a lesbian in the 80s? Fiction or non. Thought you might be a good person to ask.
Sarah Schulman’s The Sophie Horowitz Story (1984) is a classic. I should add as a disclaimer that Sarah and I were in the same class in high school.
Thanks! I’ll have to check it out.
How about ‘Mullet’s’! 🙂
He he. Very clever. Definitely in the running. Did they call them mullets back in the day?
Not that I recall, but that could just be selective memory loss. 🙂
k.d Lang and Melissa Etheridge TOTALLY have to be playing on the Walkman!
You got it.
Would definitely read.
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
