What to watch?

images[1]We have nothing to watch. Nothing, I tell you, nothing, even though we have cable television with a bunch of premium channels, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and three Redboxes located less than two miles from our house.

There haven’t been any new episodes of Modern Family. We’re all caught up with Orange Is the New Black, Girls, Transparent, Jessica Jones, Master of None, Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt, Broad City, The Walking Dead. I think there’s a new season of Orphan Black out, but last I checked it wasn’t available for streaming through Amazon.

Washed up celebrity horse with depression and addiction issues. What’s not to love?

I binged watched three seasons of Bojack Horseman one weekend without W because I thought she detested shows with talking animals. That’s what she had said, anyway. Turns out she meant live action shows and not cartoons.

“Like Look Who’s Talking,” she tried to explain.

“That had a talking baby in it,” I said. “And it was hilarious.”

She made her angry face.

“You mean like Babe,” I said, trying to help. “Our mother called us all the same,” I said in my best pig voice. “How could you not like Babe?

More angry face.

We have been trying to pick a new show.

“What about The Sopranos,” W asks.

“That seems so old. I don’t know that I can get into it.”

She forces a stream of hot air through her mouth like a tea kettle. This is the sound of exasperation.

She’s already named a bunch of shows: House of Cards, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Dexter. She ends up watching them herself because they don’t interest me. I am difficult. Impossible. I am glad I’m not married to myself.

See, everyone loves a skinny tie.

I suggest Mad Men because, well, skinny ties.

“You don’t want to watch The Sopranos because it’s too old, but you want to watch Mad Men?

So. Much. Angry. Face.

Our youngest suggests Haven.

“What’s that?” I ask.

“It’s based on the Stephen King book The Colorado Kid,” he says.

“I liked that book.”

“Yeah, the people in the town have supernatural powers,” he says.

“Um. No. I don’t like that supernatural stuff.”

“You liked Stranger Things!” W says way too loud.

“Yeah, but that had Winona Ryder and Eggo waffles.”

What did you watch this summer?

  1. We just started Stranger Things. I love it so much! Reminds me of Stand By Me mixed with ET. 😬

  2. Well, in your defense, The Sopranos is a lot older than Mad Men. Love BOTH. And Mad Men is much more than just skinny ties. It’s the endless scotch and cigarettes. And more scotch, and more cigarettes. Then shrimp cocktail. Followed by scotch and cigarettes. You get nauseated just watching them, it’s fabulous.

Then again, Breaking Bad doesn’t interest you so I guess we can no longer be friends…one of my all-time favourites! Also, Flight of the Conchords is up there.

    • Mad Men sounds a lot like the movie Carol.

It’s not so much that I don’t want to watch these shows like Breaking Bad or the Sopranos. It’s just that I’m always weighing whether or not I want to use an hour of my time to watch TV or use it to write or blog or copy edit an anthology, which is what I’m doing now and why I haven’t responded to your last e-mail.

I do get sucked in sometimes. Sons of Anarchy. When I found out it was loosely based on Hamlet, I was all over that. And Walking Dead. Got sucked in watching Rick Grimes with that iconic sheriff’s hat navigating a new world.

We just finished watching a really funny show called Getting On. I think it was on HBO.

  3. I’ve been watching through Star Trek Next Gen, Malcolm in the Middle, and BBC’s Top Gear. Check out Grace & Frankie if you haven’t seen it yet.

Movie-wise, I can recommend, if you haven’t seen them: Tangerine, XXY, Moonrise Kingdom, 52 Tuesdays, Dope, My Prairie Home, Beginners, to name a few.

It’s possible my life has become too much Netflix… oops.

    • Not a big Grace & Frankie fan. We have seen Tangerine, Moonrise Kingdom and My Prairie Home. Loved them all! Dope is in our queue. Will have to check out the others you have suggested. Thanks!

  4. Honestly the same old crap the Yuri Anime I love has been taken down off Hulu and Cruncyroll is a pain so I’m honestly bored want to see Orange Is The NewBlack but meh can’t seem to get into anything these days

  5. I really enjoy suits, the fosters, and Wentworth. All binge worthy!

  6. I rewatch stuff like crazy. The 5 shows I watch over and over are That 70s Show, Sherlock, The IT Crowd, The Office, and Dr. Who.

    • Interesting. W has never watched The Office. I wouldn’t mind re-watching from the beginning. She watches Doctor Who, but I don’t. Have heard good things about Sherlock. Happy viewing!

      • Well there’s two shows you can try! I didn’t like the last couple seasons of the office but when a series runs long the last seasons just seem like they’re stretching a bit.

  7. Dark Matter, Wynonna Earp, 12 Monkeys, Grace and Frankie, Mr Robot. 🙂

  8. You two are so funny. Don’t know how many channel options there are but in our house, it’s either Pawn Stars, Pawn Stars, or sometimes Pawn Stars. It’s a redneck remote and I’m not in control. Save me.
