Today is the day. June 6. Season 2 of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black is available. All 13 episodes.
“How many episodes are we going to watch tonight?” W asked this morning.
“One. Maybe,” I replied.
Of course, I’m itching to find out what’s happened to Piper and crew.
But I already don’t want it to be over.
You know she wants me.
That’s how much I love Orange Is the New Black. It’s funny, it’s poignant, it’s got lesbians and Laura Prepon in those black glasses. Damn.
Besides, it’s the only show out there that can reference Pablo Neruda and female ejaculation in the same episode. That Jenji Kohan is a genius.
The world may never know. Wink.
So, binge or save? It reminds me of a cherry Tootsie Pop and the eternal question of “How many licks?” (Of course it does, Middle-age Butch. You know you wanted to say that.)
We’ll start with episode one tonight. It’s called “Thirsty Bird.” I’ll make cheese steaks and tater tots for dinner, because it’s Friday night. It’ll be an event.
Maybe we’ll watch an episode Saturday night and one on Sunday night.
All bets are off after that.
Because it’s a show that revolves around lesbians. Butch lesbians and crazy lesbians. College graduate lesbians and sexy lesbians. Bad lesbians and bad-ass lesbians.
You know you can’t stop at just one.

I watched the first 12 episodes on Friday and the last one this morning. Definite binge.
Wow. I’d say that’s a binge. Hope you enjoyed.
I used to be like that with ‘The L Word’ and before that, ‘Queer as Folk’. Like calls to like, eh?
I haven’t been able to get into OitNB. I think it’s the prison setting. It hurts my heart to watch women in that environment, even if it is fiction.
Never used to when I was younger, perhaps because there was so little lesbian representation on TV that a hurting heart was better than invisibility.
Sure, we seek out entertainment that mirrors our own lives.
I get that about OITNB. It walks a fine line between comedy and heartbreak. I do think the show is doing great things as far as giving exposure to certain minority groups — transgender people, butches, etc. — and shedding light on the injustices of prison (especially women in prison). I think OITNB will be one of those shows that we look back on years from now as influential and groundbreaking.
I binged it like it was the last TV show on earth and they were taking it away from me tomorrow.
I have no regrets.
Except that it will be another YEAR until we get another season. So maybe I do have one regret.
But I’d have to expand your definition of the show–I think it’s about women, all kinds of women, and it’s all OK. And that’s what’s so brilliant about it, the women on the show are who they are, faults (I mean, they’re in prison) and all.
Simply as women we’re not allowed to be complicated in our representation in media. Not in our orientations, not in the way we come to our gender, not in having flaws that are not cute, that are not pretty. OITNB is all of that.
And it’s funny. And yes, Jenji Kohan is a total genius.
I think my head is still spinning from watching that incredible season.
Love that you watched “like it was the last TV show on earth.” Not a bad way to go out, and I admire your enthusiasm.
And yes, you’re right, the show is about women. Glorious, beautiful, brave, flawed women. I guess I get overexcited whenever I see more than one lesbian on a TV screen at one time.
We are only two shows in. Just dipping our toes in the crazy fun that is OITNB.
We’re late getting into the show. Just started watching season 1 about a week ago. So far we’re averaging 1-2 shows a night and I’d say we’re definitely hooked on it. In love with it? I don’t know about that but it is a very interesting and entertaining show.
Definitely entertaining. And addictive.
I thought I would binge on it but have been stuck on episode 7 for a week. I think I will try it again when I get home… I think.
Yeah, we’re not whizzing through season 2 like we did season 1.
We watched all the episodes over one weekend. We loved the ending. The first episode didn’t thrill me and I got massive anxiety over what was going on with Poussey (because apparently I get far too invested in this show). I’ll probably wait about 4 months or so and watch both seasons over again. But maybe not all in one day. Now. Try Sherlock. It’s AWESOME, even though there are no lesbians.
W loves Poussey. We have 3 episodes to go. Want to watch them but don’t want it to be over. Sherlock, huh? Not my genre but maybe we will give it a go. W watches Sons of Anarchy, and sometimes I’ll watch that with her. I’ve heard good things about Orphan Black. Maybe we will catch up on movies this summer.
My partner loves SoA and OB but I don’t like either. Too violent for me. I didn’t think I’d like Sherlock either but I watched it for some reason and now I’m hooked. The bad thing is that they only film 3 episodes every 2 years. The 3rd season just finished & there won’t be more for TWO YEARS. Sigh.
Wow. There’s a true test of one’s patience.
